Finding the Way to Freedom in Spanish Florida

As part of Florida Living History, Inc.’s (FLH’s) 2015 “St. Augustine’s 450th Anniversary” commemorations, volunteers from FLH – in partnership with Fort Mose Historic State Park, and the Fort Mose Historical Society – will present 18th-century, historical interpretation at Fort Mose Historic State Park! This program focuses on how African slaves fled from bondage in the English plantations south-ward to liberty in Spanish Florida, beginning the southern route of America’s first “underground railroad”. Fort Mose Historic State Park is the site of the first, legally sanctioned free black settlement in the continental U.S., established in 1738.
