Cap’n Bob, bewhiskered and full of fun begins the journey with Ponce de Leon landing in St. Augustine in 1513, and being met by the Timucuan Indians. The story of the real “Diamond Lil” and her part in St. Aug. history is next. Pedro Menendez crossing in 1565, pirate attacks, burning of St. Aug., coquina and the Castillo San Marcos, the first real lighthouse in FL (1824), the Civil War, the new Lighthouse (1874) and Minorcans and a song by Cap’n Bob!
Act II is started by U.S.Coast Guard Captain Baxter. “My friends call me Bax. You may call me Captain Baxter!” He tells about the Fresnel lens, the electrification of the entire Light Station and the decline and disrepair of the entire enterprise. But then, The JSL – The Junior Service League – came to the rescue and Oh -what a job they did. All this and more!
Next, “Lighthouse Volunteer Dave” saunters on stage and answers all the many humorous questions (scripted) that are most frequently asked at The Light Station. More pirate jokes, the Minorcans, “the wondrous bird,” 1,200,000 bricks! and on and on…
All this early Old Florida history delivered with humorous anecdotes and music and historical accuracy. St. Augustine’s own Playwright/Actor Lee Weaver portrays all three Light Keepers.
