Favored for its boldness, directness, and vibrancy, watercolor has been long regarded as a quintessential American medium. Immersed in a tradition of American artists who have embraced watercolor to document their travels, celebrated local artist Rosamond Parrish presents a compelling portrait of her travels at home and abroad.
With washes of transparent color, Parrish captures light and atmosphere, achieving luminous effects that suggest immediacy and freshness. From the Grand Canal in Venice to the picturesque streets of St. Augustine, Parrish’s brilliantly colored paintings create an evocative journal of the places she has visited and her experiences along the way.
The exhibition opening for Have Brush, Will Travel will take place during St. Augustine’s First Friday Art Walk on August 4 from 5:30-7 PM.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
A Florida resident since 1961, Rosamond Parrish studied watercolor with legendary instructor Edgar Whitney and taught painting at the Jacksonville Art Museum (now MOCA-Jax). Founder of the Jacksonville Watercolor Society, she became a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society in 1972. Parrish served on the Board of the St. Augustine Art Association and won numerous awards for her drawings and paintings. She received the coveted ROWITA (Recognizing Outstanding Women in the Arts) award for her many contributions to the cultural arts of St. Johns County.
Parrish is also the author and illustrator of two books, Lincolnville, a Sketchbook Journal of St. Augustine’s Historic Neighborhood, and St. Augustine, A Sketchbook. Her studio is in St. Augustine, and she is represented by Wendy Tatter Gallery.
