Eclectic southern music makers Royal Johnson are making plans for a big July, bringing their music to more new venues and beginning work on their sophomore album.
The month will begin with a big Independence Celebration at Mulligan’s Food and Spirits in Marietta, where they will co-bill with fellow blues rockers Big Mike and the Booty Papas and Roger “Hurricane” Wilson.
They will debut at three other Georgia venues as well this month – Fat Matt’s in Atlanta, Grant Street Music Room in Clarkesville,
and LL Creek in Waycross.
The end of the month will see the band make their first trip to St. Augustine, Florida, with shows at Mardi Gras and the prestigious Limelight Theatre.
July will also see Royal Johnson begin work on their second album. They have chosen Muscadine Studios for the project, home of Paul Hornsby, a member of both the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Hornsby has produced multiple gold and platinum records for artists such
as the Marshall Tucker Band, the Charlie Daniels Band, and Wet Willie. Hornsby recently sat in with RJ in a live show, asked the band to sit in on his new solo record and now will help them create the sounds of their second helping.
Royal Johnson self-produced and self-recorded their debut album Belly Full, which came out in September 2015, and reviews have been positive.
The band is featured on the cover of the June/July 2016 issue of Southland Magazine, and writer Lesa Dixon’s story says the album “is like sitting down to church dinner on the grounds. You just can’t get enough….a thick, rich sound. Southern rock, old school blues, a touch of bluegrass and the harmony of southern gospel. The result is a treasure of lyrics, melody and hard hitting gravel.”
