The Art Studio’s featured artist for the month of October is Virginia Lee Pledger. Having followed her Naval Officer husband around from place to place, Virginia used to think she had the most sideways career known to man. Having moved so often, she found herself talking her way into a variety of jobs. She has been a librarian at an elementary school, a reporter, a 2nd grade school teacher, worked in clothing construction for Vogue Pattern Book in New York City, and was a home economist for Coats and Clark notions company. Once she and her husband settled down in the Washington D.C. area, she became a teacher at the University of Maryland. Virginia taught 3 levels of Clothing Construction, Tailoring, History of Textiles, History of Costume, Flat Pattern Making, and Draping Pattern Making Methods. After 7 years at the University, she became a Textile Conservator and began working for the Smithsonian Institue, The White House, Mount Vernon, and 2 Marine Corps museums in Washington D.C. These days she is a mixed media artist who specializes in fiber art, acrylic, and photography. She has used her experiences which made her a very good Conservator along with some short courses she began to take in the mid-1980s to come to this point. She is a member of The St. Augustine Art Association, P.A.S.T.A., and The Art Studio. A reception at The Art Studio of St. Augustine Beach is planned during the First Friday Artwalk, October 2nd, from 5:00pm-8:30pm. Please plan to visit The Art Studio and see Virginia’s work!
