In the early morning hours of April 27, 1885, the SS Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River. Many of the 2,000 passengers on board, including 1,100 Union solders recently released from military prisons, were killed. Friends member Don Wiles, a descendant of a survivor of the Sultana tragedy, will discuss how one of the largest maritime disasters in American history occurred 18 days after the Civil War officially ended.
