In conjunction with the CEAM Artist Residency artists and educators Katie Hargrave (Chattanooga, TN) and Meredith Lynn (Tallahassee, FL) will give an artist talk about their collaborative work relating to the exploration of the historic, cultural, and environmental impacts of public land.
During their residency, Hargrave and Lynn will embark on the final component of their ongoing collaborative project, A thousand-mile walk to the gulf. This project examines the problematic legacy of the 19th Century environmental writer and conservationist John Muir, particularly in the Southeastern United States, through sculpture and video installation.
Over the past several years the artists have been following the path that Muir traversed from Kentucky to Florida and wrote about in his book of the same name. Their work interrogates how consumerism, mainstream conservation movements, the romanticization of western expansion, and attitude toward nature all interrelate.
Their work has been shown at Atlanta Contemporary (Atlanta, GA), the Wiregrass Museum of Art (Dothan, AL), Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, TN), House Guest Gallery (Louisville, KY), and has been published by Walls Divide Press (Memphis, TN). Together they have been artists in residence at Signal Fire (Portland, OR).
