Artist Leslie Robison is one of 24 individuals chosen to use a replica of the Monument to the Spanish Constitution of 1814 to represent ideas of freedom, democracy, human rights, and compassion in celebration of Saint Augustine’s 450th Anniversary.
Robison is concerned with the meanings given by institutions, such as governmental agencies, to the words we use and the environments we live in. As a public monument, the obelisk represents the power of government over individual lives.
In an effort to break down the scale of history’s narrative into individual meanings, the artist invites citizens of St. Augustine to pose with a small model of the obelisk. Robison will take photographs of individual citizens through July. Each image will eventually be attached to the monument, so that the people whom governments and histories should represent are more visible than the monument itself.
