  • Wendy Tatter
    Wendy Tatter
Visual Arts; Batik...working with fabric, wax and dyes
Although she was born in Baltimore, Maryland, Wendy always felt the call of the islands. Abandoning her studies at Virginia Commonwealth University to follow her tropical infatuation, Tatter lived in the West Indies, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Brasil.   Tatter was introduced to the art of batik in Mexico while attending Instituto Allende. Fascinated by the technique, she has developed a style all her own.   Her work often reflects the people and places from her travels and has been exhibited and collected worldwide.   Wendy is the recipient of the ROWITA Award.  The Dr. Gail Pflaster ROWITA (Recognizing Outstanding Women in the Arts) is a lifetime achievement award for women in our community who have made significant contributions to the arts. They are chosen from nominations that have been submitted by members of the community.  Read more here.   Wendy is now working full-time in her studio making new original batiks and is accepting commissions and orders upon request
  • Lacey Taylor
    Lacey Taylor
    Visual Arts: Painting
A native, I was born in northeast Florida but spent my childhood in the southeast near Ft. Myers Beach on the Gulf Coast. My days were spent crabbing in canals, shelling on beaches, boating near Sanibel and Captiva Islands, building forts in banana trees and day dreaming near marinas and boardwalks. I would eventually return to Jacksonville near my extended family, attend the University of North Florida for graphic design and advertising, become a website design pioneer at the beginning of the internet and expand into digital marketing. When I return to south Florida now, I am overwhelmed by the sentimentality and attachment I have to the tropical trees and plants. This emotion and desire to express my gratitude for Florida, inspired my current series. (Photos coming soon.)
  • JW Gilmore and The Blues Authority
JW Gilmore and The Blues Authority
Music; Music: Composition; Music: Instrumental; Music: Vocal
JW Gilmore and the Blues Authority is a toe-tapping, finger-snapping, hip-shaking, boogie-woogie, jump-swing blues band. To mix things up, they toss in some rockabilly, old-time country blues, and a few tunes on the jazzier side, including some by Miles Davis. JW Gilmore plays harmonica and sings. He is joined by Mario Saponero, a talented musician who plays guitar, and can also sit in on bass, keyboards, and the harmonica. Mark Evangelista, who is, according to JW, a "phenomenal bassist" comes down from Connecticut to perform with them. Finally, David Allen is on the drums, and he can also play keyboards and bass. All of them may harmonize with J. W. Gilmore. JW has won the Florida harmonica championship five times. He no longer competes, but does attend each year and performs as a special guest. With this kind of talent, it's no wonder that JW Gilmore and the Blues Authority is a favorite blues band in Northeast Florida.

From original to contemporary and old-time tunes, their song variety is one of the hallmarks of their stage presentation. Eric Searcy is a Florida native who has been playing bluegrass banjo in Northern Florida for over 30 years. Eric always finds the cream of the crop of banjo tunes and brings them to the stage with drive and enthusiasm. He also plays the dobro and adds a wonderful selection of classic tunes to the band with the “hound dog” as well. His vocal tunes are among the crowd favorites and his strong singing style brings great warmth and personality to the Driftwoods performance. Gabriel Valla, also a Florida native and an instrumental powerhouse with his commanding performances on lead guitar as well as the mandolin. Gabe’s original tunes add a distinctive and different sound to the band's repertoire. Gabe is a gifted singer and his vocal selections range from traditional to contemporary. Elisabeth Williamson, a Florida girl, provides a strong lead vocal style and driving rhythm guitar. She also performs several tunes with the band on frailed banjo as well. Her original songs have become some crowd favorites. She released her debut songwriting recording, Deep, in 2010 to critical acclaim. Please visit her site to find out more. Lon Williamson, California boy! Lon is another multi-talented member of the Driftwoods and plays upright bass. Lon lays down the tempo with a beautiful style and warm tone. • Susan Thomas Novy
    Susan Thomas Novy
    Visual Arts: Photography
Susan Thomas Novy – Nature & Wildlife Photographer Since childhood I have been passionate about nature and wildlife.  The momentary glances of a dragonfly, the hunting techniques of a sea bird or the seriously inquisitive look of an owl always leaves me feeling that they are more human-like than we know. When I step into the forest or walk along a river’s edge I say a little prayer. “Please know I come in peace, only to share your beauty with the world.” It always astonishes me how this small intention opens the most beautiful communication between my lens and the subject. Even dragonflies smile. My lens also captures flora and fauna, the intricate design of spider webs, the bluish orange hue of sunrise, the cool pink glow of the setting sun, and the reflection of light on water.  I am a Virginia native and currently live in Saint Augustine, Florida. When not taking photos I’m teaching yoga, writing poetry, collecting crystals – earth’s original art -- and learning how to walk the earth with a light footprint.  ❤

  • Teri Tompkins
    Teri Tompkins
    Literature: Non-Fiction; Visual Arts: Painting
Teri Tompkins followed her love of art around the world. She has lived in Rome and, most recently, California. Now, she has returned home to St. Augustine. As a teenager, Teri Tompkins traded her St. Augustine upbringing for the artistic richness of Rome. “I was working as an au pair, which afforded me the ability to study from the wealth of masterworks on every street. I spent hours at the Vatican each weekend, studied Caravaggio in churches, and gawked over centuries of paintings.” Tompkins studied illustration, painting, and art history in California and has returned to St. Augustine. Her paintings — a collection of positive and hopeful works — are shown at Neff Jewelers. She also runs a Monday night figure session at the St. Augustine Art Association. The Compass caught up with the multifaceted artist to chat about returning to her roots, painting Northeast Florida, and portrait work. Compass: Why did you move back to St. Augustine in 2005 after living in California for almost 25 years? Teri Tompkins: I have always loved my hometown, and I’ve always appreciated how special it is — even when my hunger for learning and adventure took me to other places. The water and coastline on the West Coast is quite interesting to paint, but here, it is far more fun to be in the water. I also love that I can ride my bike just about anywhere. Compass: What are some of your favorite places to paint in Northeast Florida? T.T.: First of all, my very favorite places to paint are top secret — especially the places where I am not supposed to be painting. Anastasia State Park is pretty fantastic early in the morning. Up and down the Intracoastal Waterway, there are so many beautiful spots that require some exploration to find. And, of course, the way the light hits the old architecture in town at different times of day is extraordinary. Compass: Tell us about the women you paint in pieces like “Guardian of the Honey Bees” and “Wildflower Renaissance.” T.T.: The angelic figures in my environmental “Guardian” paintings are not portraits, but rather metaphors for the guardian or protector in each of us. I take the protection of our environment and creatures very seriously, and painting the world as healthy and cherished is a kind of visual prayer. I am lucky enough to have some very beautiful friends and family members who regularly get roped into modeling for me. My niece Kelsey posed for “Guardian of the Honey Bees,” my granddaughter Jesse posed underwater for the ocean Guardians, and my daughter, Rain, posed for “Florida Native Butterflies.” Models typically pose live, then I take reference photos to see me through the many layers of paint required to complete the work. Compass: We were looking at the “Portraits” page on your website. Are those all commissioned works? T.T.: My first love may be portrait painting, and I have been accepting portrait commissions for years. When teaching portrait classes, I sometimes ask a friend to pose in exchange for the study when we are done. Between commissions, I beg family members to model. Compass: How is Plein Air painting different from painting from a photo or memory? T.T.: There simply is no substitute for painting from life. Whether painting a human, a bowl of fruit, or an outdoor scene, you perceive things that a photograph just cannot tell you. As handy as a reference photo can be, they do not tell the whole truth — especially digital photos that translate information through a little computer. Photos are great for completing work when the subject cannot be present, or the cloud formation has moved on. In nature, the artist can feel, see, hear, smell and sense things, and those influences appear on the canvas like magic.

Visual Arts: Illustration; Visual Arts: Painting
I have been an artist all of my life, and have experimented with many types of visual art throughout my career. Since graduating from Winthrop University in 2001, with a BFA in Illustration, I have worked in advertising, marketing, product design, and now in art licensing. I decided to step out on my own and establish the lezleelliott brand in 2010. With a passion and enthusiasm for building expressive color palettes and connecting on-trend ideas with a modern and unique approach, I create designs and illustrations that fit between the lines of traditional style categories and allow the modern woman to define her own sense of style. I continue to work and build towards making lezleelliott into a worldwide recognized brand. Currently, my designs can be found in HomeGoods, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Publix, TJ Maxx, Ross, gift and independent specialty boutiques nationwide.
